Fantasy Football Start/Sit Tool
Stuck between two players for the same lineup slot? Fantasy Assist compares them on real usage, projections, matchup, and game script, then tells you who to start and why — no guessing off a rankings list.
How to decide a close start/sit call
Run any lineup decision through these five checks in order. The first one that clearly separates the two players is your answer.
- 1
Volume beats talent
Touches and targets are the most predictable input in fantasy. A running back with 18 touches has a higher floor than a more talented back splitting a backfield. Check snap share and route participation from the last three games, not the season average.
- 2
Role security
Is the player's usage tied to an injury ahead of him, a hot hand, or a locked-in job? A locked-in role is worth a couple of projected points on its own because it protects your floor.
- 3
Matchup and coverage
Look at how the opposing defense performs against that specific position and alignment — slot receivers, receiving backs, and tight ends face very different defenders than a boundary WR1.
- 4
Game script
Favored teams run more; trailing teams throw. A running back on a heavy favorite gains value late; a pass-catcher on a big underdog gets garbage-time volume.
- 5
Floor vs ceiling for your matchup
If you are projected to win comfortably, start the safer player. If you are behind, start the one with the realistic path to a 25-point game, even if he might bust.
Common questions
Who should I start this week in fantasy football?
Start the player with the highest floor at the position you must fill, unless you need a ceiling swing to win. Weigh expected volume first (touches, targets, snap share), then the matchup, then game script — projections alone hide why a player is projected that way.
Should I start a boom-or-bust player?
Only when you are projected to lose. If you are the favorite, take the steady 12-point floor. If you are a double-digit underdog or in a playoff elimination game, the volatile option gives you the outcome you actually need.
How much does the matchup really matter?
Less than volume, more than name value. A mid-tier receiver with 10 targets a game beats a star who sees five, regardless of defense. Matchup is the tiebreaker between two players in the same volume tier.
Do I start a questionable player?
Only if you have a same-position backup you can swap in before kickoff and the player practiced at least in a limited capacity late in the week. If a Q tag would leave you with an empty slot, take the healthy option.
